Understanding Dialysis & Nephrology

Two organs, one closely connected care plan.

Heart and kidney health are closely connected. Our nephrology and dialysis teams work with cardiology, intensive care and other specialists when patients have overlapping needs.

The heart and kidneys influence blood pressure, circulation, fluid balance and medicines. Kidney problems can strain the heart, and heart problems can reduce kidney function. Coordinated care helps the team make safer decisions when needs overlap.

A clearer, more hopeful way forward.

Kidney disease can feel like a long list of restrictions and numbers. We focus on clear explanations, realistic routines and a coordinated plan that protects both kidney and cardiovascular health.

When to speak with the team

Reasons people are referred.

These are common starting points, not a diagnostic checklist. The right assessment depends on the full clinical picture.

01

Reduced kidney function or abnormal urine tests

02

Swelling, breathlessness or difficult fluid balance

03

High blood pressure that remains difficult to control

04

Diabetes with kidney or cardiovascular complications

05

Preparation for dialysis or transplant

06

Heart disease in someone already receiving kidney treatment

What we can do

A complete dialysis & nephrology pathway.

Every capability is selected according to clinical need. Your team should explain why a test, treatment or referral is being considered.

01

Haemodialysis

Haemodialysis is delivered in our 3-bed dialysis centre for patients with kidney failure.

02

Nephrology consultation

A nephrologist assesses kidney function and plans treatment for kidney disease.

03

Kidney-disease monitoring

Kidney function is tracked over time through regular blood and urine testing.

04

Cardiorenal care

Kidney and heart conditions are managed together when one affects the other.

05

Inpatient and critical-care support

Dialysis and nephrology support extend into ICU/HDU for patients who are acutely unwell.

What to expect

Your care, step by step.

Complex medicine feels more manageable when every stage is visible and every question has a place.

01

Assess both systems

Kidney function, blood pressure, fluid status, heart symptoms and medicines are reviewed together.

02

Clarify the stage

Laboratory tests, urine studies, imaging and cardiovascular assessment show the current risk and options.

03

Plan the treatment

Care may include medicines, nutrition guidance, monitoring, dialysis preparation or transplant evaluation.

04

Monitor safely

Electrolytes, fluid balance, blood pressure and treatment response are checked over time.

05

Coordinate specialists

Nephrology, cardiology, endocrinology, surgery, dialysis and ICU/HDU collaborate when care is complex.

The Cardiocare advantage

Expertise is stronger when the whole system is ready.

Patients benefit from coordinated management of blood pressure, fluid balance, heart disease, diabetes and kidney function. This is why patients, families and referring clinicians choose Cardiocare for care that may need more than one specialist or facility.

01

One hospital, one plan

Consultation, diagnostics, intervention, surgery, ICU/HDU, dialysis and recovery can coordinate without fragmenting the patient journey.

02

Pioneering capability

Advanced catheter, device and surgical expertise—including Northern Nigeria’s first cardiac left bundle branch pacing—reflects a culture of clinical progress.

03

Critical care around complex care

Round-the-clock emergency, ICU and HDU support surrounds patients whose needs may change quickly.

04

Multispecialty judgement

Cardiology works alongside nephrology, endocrinology, neurology, pulmonology, surgery and other specialists when one diagnosis is not the whole story.

05

Care here in Nigeria

International-level cardiovascular capability in Abuja helps families avoid unnecessary travel abroad and remain closer to their support system.

06

Education is part of care

Plain-language teaching, patient guides, support programmes and professional education turn expertise into confidence.

Questions patients ask

Good questions deserve clear answers.

Open each question for a straightforward explanation. Your own clinician should still interpret what it means for you.

Ask the Cardiocare team
01Why does kidney disease affect the heart?

Blood pressure, fluid, salts, anaemia and blood-vessel health connect the two systems. Problems in either organ can increase the workload on the other.

02Does reduced kidney function always mean dialysis?

No. Many people are managed with monitoring, medicines and treatment of the cause. Dialysis is considered when kidney function and symptoms reach specific clinical thresholds.

03Can heart patients have kidney treatment safely?

Yes, with individual planning. Coordinated nephrology and cardiology review helps manage blood pressure, fluid and medicines.

04Why is ICU/HDU access important?

Some patients have unstable heart, fluid, infection or blood-pressure problems and may need higher-level monitoring during acute care.

This page is educational and cannot diagnose a condition or determine which treatment is right for an individual. A clinician must assess symptoms, results, medicines and overall health. Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms need urgent care.
