Understanding Coronary Angiography

Advanced treatment without automatically starting with open surgery.

A coronary angiogram helps the cardiology team see whether narrowing or blockage may be affecting blood flow to the heart. The findings guide the next conversation: medication, monitoring, stenting or surgery where appropriate.

Catheter-based care uses small access points in a blood vessel to investigate or treat selected heart and circulation problems. The procedure itself is only one part of safe care: deciding who will benefit, preparing carefully, monitoring recovery and planning follow-up matter just as much.

A clearer, more hopeful way forward.

Many catheter procedures are performed while the patient is awake, with local anaesthesia and a small access point. Suitability is individual, and Cardiocare keeps surgical and intensive-care expertise close when a more complex pathway is needed.

When to speak with the team

Reasons people are referred.

These are common starting points, not a diagnostic checklist. The right assessment depends on the full clinical picture.

01

Chest discomfort or breathlessness linked to reduced blood flow

02

An abnormal ECG, stress test, CT scan or echocardiogram

03

A suspected narrowing or blockage in a heart or peripheral artery

04

A clot-related or structural problem needing specialist review

05

A second opinion on stenting, surgery or another treatment route

06

Urgent assessment after a possible acute cardiovascular event

What we can do

A complete coronary angiography pathway.

Every capability is selected according to clinical need. Your team should explain why a test, treatment or referral is being considered.

01

Specialist pre-procedure review

A cardiologist reviews history, symptoms and prior tests before the procedure is scheduled.

02

Modern cath-lab imaging

Performed in our cardiac catheterisation laboratory using live X-ray imaging to map the coronary arteries.

03

Clear explanation of findings

Findings are reviewed with the patient before deciding on the next step.

04

PCI pathway where clinically indicated

Moves directly into angioplasty and stenting within the same procedure when a blockage needs immediate treatment.

05

Monitored recovery

The access site and vital signs are checked during a monitored recovery period afterwards.

What to expect

Your care, step by step.

Complex medicine feels more manageable when every stage is visible and every question has a place.

01

Specialist review

We connect symptoms, medical history and previous results before recommending an invasive test or treatment.

02

Plan together

The team explains the purpose, alternatives, preparation, likely recovery and questions that still need answering.

03

Cath-lab care

The procedure is performed with continuous monitoring by an experienced catheterisation team.

04

Monitored recovery

The access site, heart rhythm, blood pressure and overall condition are observed after the procedure.

05

Protect the result

Medicines, risk-factor management, rehabilitation and follow-up help support long-term benefit.

Coronary angiography, explained

A moving map of the arteries that feed the heart.

The heart muscle needs its own blood supply through the coronary arteries. When these arteries narrow or become blocked, a person may develop angina, a heart attack or reduced heart function. Coronary angiography uses a catheter, contrast and live X-ray imaging to show where blood flow may be restricted and to guide the next treatment decision.

01

Why it may be recommended

Angiography may follow concerning chest symptoms, a heart attack, an abnormal stress test or CT scan, or an unresolved question about coronary blood flow.

02

What happens during the test

After local anaesthetic, a thin catheter is commonly introduced through the wrist or groin and guided to the heart arteries. Contrast makes the arteries visible on the monitor.

03

What the result can change

The findings may support continued medical treatment, angioplasty and stenting, cardiac surgery or further monitoring. An angiogram is a decision tool, not an automatic promise of a stent.

04

Recovery is individual

Many uncomplicated diagnostic cases leave after a period of observation, while urgent or more complex procedures may require longer monitoring or admission.

When to speak with us

Start with the concern you have—not a perfect medical label.

These are common reasons to arrange an assessment. They do not confirm a diagnosis, and the appropriate starting team may change after clinical review.

  • Persistent or exertional chest pressure
  • A suspected heart attack or acute coronary syndrome
  • An abnormal stress test, coronary CT or other cardiac investigation
  • Symptoms returning after a previous stent or bypass
  • A second opinion on coronary artery disease
  • Pre-operative coronary assessment where clinically indicated
Your connected pathway

Every stage has a purpose.

Cardiocare brings the relevant specialists, investigations, treatment and follow-up into one documented plan.

01

Check readiness

The team reviews kidney function, bleeding risk, medicines, allergies and whether fasting or medicine adjustments are required.

02

Prepare the access site

Monitoring is attached, the skin is cleaned and local anaesthetic numbs the planned wrist or groin access point.

03

Create the images

Contrast is injected while the cardiology team records the coronary arteries from several angles.

04

Explain the findings

The team discusses what was seen and whether medicines, PCI, surgery or another investigation offers the best next step.

05

Monitor recovery

Staff watch the access site and vital signs and provide personalised guidance on medicines, activity, wound care and follow-up.

Why Cardiocare for this programme

Multispecialty care changes what is possible.

The strongest advantage is not one department. It is the ability to bring the right departments together quickly and safely.

PCI without changing hospitals

Where clinically appropriate and consented, angioplasty and stenting can follow the diagnostic study within the Cardiocare cath-lab pathway.

Balanced heart-team decisions

Complex disease can be reviewed with cardiac surgeons so intervention and bypass options are considered together.

Monitoring and escalation close by

Laboratory, inpatient care, ICU/HDU and 24-hour emergency services support planned and urgent coronary care.

Urgent warning signs

Do not wait for a routine appointment.

  • New or persistent chest pressure
  • Chest discomfort with sweating, nausea, collapse or severe breathlessness
  • Heavy access-site bleeding after discharge
  • Fainting or sudden neurological symptoms

Go to the nearest emergency department immediately — do not drive yourself. Call our 24/7 emergency line on +234 806 142 4614 to tell us you are coming.

The Cardiocare advantage

Expertise is stronger when the whole system is ready.

Assessment, imaging, intervention and higher-level monitoring are available within the same connected hospital system. This is why patients, families and referring clinicians choose Cardiocare for care that may need more than one specialist or facility.

01

One hospital, one plan

Consultation, diagnostics, intervention, surgery, ICU/HDU, dialysis and recovery can coordinate without fragmenting the patient journey.

02

Pioneering capability

Advanced catheter, device and surgical expertise—including Northern Nigeria’s first cardiac left bundle branch pacing—reflects a culture of clinical progress.

03

Critical care around complex care

Round-the-clock emergency, ICU and HDU support surrounds patients whose needs may change quickly.

04

Multispecialty judgement

Cardiology works alongside nephrology, endocrinology, neurology, pulmonology, surgery and other specialists when one diagnosis is not the whole story.

05

Care here in Nigeria

International-level cardiovascular capability in Abuja helps families avoid unnecessary travel abroad and remain closer to their support system.

06

Education is part of care

Plain-language teaching, patient guides, support programmes and professional education turn expertise into confidence.

Questions patients ask

Good questions deserve clear answers.

Open each question for a straightforward explanation. Your own clinician should still interpret what it means for you.

Ask the Cardiocare team
01Does every abnormal test mean I need a procedure?

No. Results are interpreted with symptoms, examination and overall risk. Some people need medicines or monitoring, while others may benefit from intervention or surgery.

02Will I be awake?

Many catheter-based procedures use local anaesthesia with light sedation rather than general anaesthesia. Your team explains the plan before consent.

03How long is recovery?

It depends on the procedure, access site and your wider health. The team gives individual instructions about movement, medicines, wound care, work and follow-up.

04Why have this done at a full hospital?

The cath lab is connected to cardiac imaging, surgery, anaesthesia, ICU/HDU, laboratory and inpatient care, so the whole pathway is available in one centre.
