Understanding Pacemakers, ICDs & CRT

Listening to the heart’s electrical system—and treating the right problem.

Cardiac devices can treat selected slow rhythms, dangerous fast rhythms and some forms of heart failure. Our team supports patients from assessment and implantation through programming, education and follow-up.

The heart has its own electrical network. When signals become too slow, too fast or poorly coordinated, patients may feel palpitations, fatigue, dizziness, fainting or breathlessness. Rhythm care begins by recording what is happening and matching the treatment to the individual rhythm and heart function.

A clearer, more hopeful way forward.

A device is not the end of normal life. With good wound care, education and scheduled checks, many people return to everyday activities with greater confidence and protection.

When to speak with the team

Reasons people are referred.

These are common starting points, not a diagnostic checklist. The right assessment depends on the full clinical picture.

01

A slow, fast or irregular heartbeat

02

Palpitations, unexplained dizziness or fainting

03

An abnormal ECG or Holter monitor result

04

A pacemaker, ICD or CRT device that needs checking

05

Heart failure where device therapy may be considered

06

A second opinion about an implanted cardiac device

What we can do

A complete Pacemakers, ICDs & CRT pathway.

Every capability is selected according to clinical need. Your team should explain why a test, treatment or referral is being considered.

01

Single and dual-chamber pacemakers

Single- or dual-chamber pacemakers are selected according to the rhythm problem being treated.

02

Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators

ICDs are implanted for patients at risk of a life-threatening abnormal heart rhythm.

03

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy

Cardiac resynchronisation therapy paces both ventricles together to improve pumping efficiency in selected heart-failure patients.

04

Generator changes

The device generator is replaced through a smaller procedure once its battery runs low.

05

Device education and follow-up

Patients are taught how to live with their device and return for scheduled follow-up checks.

What to expect

Your care, step by step.

Complex medicine feels more manageable when every stage is visible and every question has a place.

01

Capture the rhythm

ECG, Holter monitoring, device records and symptom history help identify the electrical problem.

02

Assess the whole heart

Echocardiography and other tests show whether structure or pumping function affects the plan.

03

Choose the right route

Options may include observation, medicines, a device, programming changes or another specialist procedure.

04

Implant or optimise

When a device is appropriate, the team plans implantation and individual programming.

05

Stay connected

Regular interrogation checks battery, leads, recorded rhythms and how the device is supporting the patient.

The Cardiocare advantage

Expertise is stronger when the whole system is ready.

Cardiocare combines implant expertise with inpatient monitoring, emergency support, imaging and heart-failure management. This is why patients, families and referring clinicians choose Cardiocare for care that may need more than one specialist or facility.

01

One hospital, one plan

Consultation, diagnostics, intervention, surgery, ICU/HDU, dialysis and recovery can coordinate without fragmenting the patient journey.

02

Pioneering capability

Advanced catheter, device and surgical expertise—including Northern Nigeria’s first cardiac left bundle branch pacing—reflects a culture of clinical progress.

03

Critical care around complex care

Round-the-clock emergency, ICU and HDU support surrounds patients whose needs may change quickly.

04

Multispecialty judgement

Cardiology works alongside nephrology, endocrinology, neurology, pulmonology, surgery and other specialists when one diagnosis is not the whole story.

05

Care here in Nigeria

International-level cardiovascular capability in Abuja helps families avoid unnecessary travel abroad and remain closer to their support system.

06

Education is part of care

Plain-language teaching, patient guides, support programmes and professional education turn expertise into confidence.

Questions patients ask

Good questions deserve clear answers.

Open each question for a straightforward explanation. Your own clinician should still interpret what it means for you.

Ask the Cardiocare team
01Is every palpitation dangerous?

No. Palpitations have many causes. Recording the rhythm during symptoms helps separate harmless sensations from rhythms that need treatment.

02Will I feel a pacemaker working?

Most people do not feel routine pacing. Your device team explains what sensations or alerts should be reported.

03Can a device be checked without surgery?

Yes. Interrogation communicates with the device from outside the body and reviews function, battery, leads and stored rhythm information.

04Why does long-term follow-up matter?

Programming needs can change, batteries gradually deplete and stored rhythm information can guide wider heart care.
